- Vitalik Buterin criticizes the trend towards highly “agentic” AI development.
- He supports increasing pathways for human input to improve output and safety.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has voiced concerns over the AI sector’s focus on fully autonomous systems, warning that such a trajectory may reduce both the quality and safety of AI outputs.
Vitalik Buterin expressed frustration with the AI field’s push toward overly “agentic” models, arguing that enabling more human input leads to better, safer outcomes. He said he’s more excited by open-weight models with strong editing capabilities than those built purely for…

Buterin Highlights Preference for Human-Involved AI Models
Speaking in alignment with views recently shared by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy, Buterin stated that prioritising “agentic” AI, where systems operate with minimal human oversight, risks limiting opportunities for human feedback.
Echoing something @karpathy recently said, it does frustrate me how a lot of AI development is trying to be as "agentic" as possible, when actually creating *more* paths for human input both creates a better output (now for quite a while going forward) and is better for safety.

He emphasised that open-weight AI models designed with strong editing and adjustment features could offer better outcomes in the near term and improve long-term stability.
Buterin noted that enabling multiple entry points for user intervention could enhance safety protocols and responsiveness in AI systems.
Future Vision Includes Brain-Computer Interfaces for Real-Time AI Adjustment
Looking forward, Buterin outlined a concept where brain-computer interfaces could enable AI models to sense real-time human reactions and adapt accordingly.
This approach would integrate continuous user feedback directly into the AI’s operational processes, potentially reshaping the way decision-making and content generation are handled in complex systems.
While not discarding the utility of autonomous agents, Buterin made clear that his primary interest lies in collaborative AI structures where human guidance remains central.
At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at $4 279.96, reflecting a $58.89 increase from its previous close. That equates to a +1.4% uptick in the last 24 hours
